Crowdonomic Speaks at U Start 2015 in Kuala Lumpur

We were invited by the University Malaya Centre of Innovation and Commercialization (UMCIC) and Angel Investors Club of IP Owners (AIPO) to participate in U Start 2015.

A two day conference and exhibition event showcased start ups that were originated within local universities in Malaysia. Crowdonomic was present on the second day (21st Jan) to talk about equity crowdfunding and how start ups can seize this opportunity to tap into alternative financing for their ventures, especially when Malaysia will become one of the forerunners in Southeast Asia to put in place a progressive and inclusive equity crowdfunding regulation in 2015. We were situated next to the AIPO booth, where there was a steady stream of conference participants dropping by to enquire about IP registrations and the like.

With Lok CH, Chairman of AIPO Angel Investors Club, and Lew Yeng Zhi, Marketing Manager of AIPO Angel Investors Club

With participation from the top local universities in Malaysia, e.g. Universiti Malaya, Universiti Putra Malaysia etc., the conference was officiated by none other than Tan Sri Dr. Irwan Serigar Abdullah, the Chairman of MAGIC, and there was also a speech by Dato’ Hafsah Hashim, the CEO of SME Corp. Both spoke about the encouraging growth of entrepreneurs in Malaysia and the importance of supporting early stage SMEs, who are major contributors to the growth of innovation in the country.

During the Crowdonomic presentation on ECF, most of the questions from the floor were about the viability of the ECF platform in Malaysia – it being a new venture financing concept to many local businesses – and how it has worked for other countries. Some participants wanted to know how the platform can assist them in their quest for venture financing, and overall, people hearing about ECF for the first time are keen to participate in it. It’s mighty encouraging when a 19 year old student with her own micro business came up to us and asked how she can register as an investor! A good sign on how the next generation of investors are comfortable with financial technology!

This week, on 28th January, we’ll be speaking to a group of investors and enterprises at the Malaysia Institute of Accountants’ Crowdfunding Seminar – more to come!
